This pattern is only for private use.
Yarn: Novita Tennesee, 94 g. This is a Finnish yarn, 100% mercerized cotton with gauge 22s = 4″, and yardage 100g = 234 yards.
Needels: 3 ½ mm circular needle and 3 ½ mm dpn’s for the crown decreases.
Size: woman/man
Cast on 120/ 140 stitches and join in the round working in rib pattern (knit 3, purl 2), starting the rows with knitl stitches. Knit until the piece measures about 20cm or 8″.
The decreases are KKS (Knit-knit-slip= knit two stitches and then slip the first of these two over the second). First decrease round: *Work 26/31 stitches in rib pattern, then KKS, place marker, purl 2* repeat 3 times from* The following decrease rows: *Work to two stitches of marker, KKS, purl 2, repeat from *. Decrease until 12 stitches remain. Break yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches, pull tight and weave in the yarn.
Happy knitting!

This is an ideal hat for a man. Thank you for a very practical pattern. I like the unusual way of decreasing for the crown. I have made two, one in fine pure wool with more stitches and one in soft thick acrylic on 4mm needles. They will be given to asylum seekers who find our winters are cold. I am a great-grandmother over 80. I look forward to seeing more of your patterns. Best wishes from Australia.
For an average size man’s head: In Paton’s Worsted weight wool (size US 5 / 16″ circulars) CO 120 sts and knit approx 8 1/2″ in pattern. Decrease rows: divided up stitches and placed markers every 30 stitches. Placed each of the 4 markers just after the first knit stitch in a rib section, so I could K2 Tog just before each marker…would give a clean line for the decreases!
Stopped at 20 stitches, K 2 Tog the last row and drew yarn through the ends for a more rounded finish.
Looks great! Thank you for the pattern…he loves it!!!!
Thanks for that moderation. I think it’ s going to be very usefull and happy to know he loves it
I was crazy excited about this pattern! I can’t wait to finish it up and send it to my uncle.
…but now that I’m close to starting the decreases, I’m not clear how I’m supposed to “mark” the sections for the decreases. You state, “The following decrease rows: *Work to two stitches of marker, KKS, purl 2, repeat from *.”
Where am I supposed to place a marker? If I work in the pattern until there two stitches until the marker, then I KKS, but where are the purls? Am I making sense? I think my confusion is showing…
Sarah H,
Those markers mark fourths of all stitches (30 if you have 120 stitches in your project and 35 if you have 140 stitches). Place the marker to the 30 th stitch and make the KKS four stitches before that marker. This way you end up doing it just before two purls and repeat dec in same spot in every row. Before KKS you have four stitches before marker.
I made this hat for my son to take back to school. (He had lost both his hats…) He has a smaller head, so I only knitted 7″ before the decreases. Perfect! Love the pattern—thanks for sharing! LoriOnLTB (Raverlry)
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR PATTERN! my neighbor is undergoing chemo therapy for cancer. I will make him a beautiful hat with your pattern!

I’m about to make another, for myself, in the same gray wool with some lavender wool thrown in for good measure. I liked the hat that much! The recipient wears it daily.
HELP!!!! I am stuck on the decrease. I am trying to finish this hat for a birthday present for tomorrow night. I don’t want to give up and just do a regular decrease. I really love this design and think it makes such a special touch.
I am sitting on my beginning marker ready to start decreasing. So, do I k and then kks on the k3?
[...] chose the free Cousteau Hat pattern and made a few adjustments to it. From comments on other projects I knew that the hat comes out [...]
Great hat! Btw do you decrease every row or every other row?
Best,

As a Finnish-American, I am happy to find this beautiful pattern. I plan to knit it for a little boy so will do my best to size it down. Thank you for designing such an interesting hat!
